Rubén Medina is a poet, fiction writer, and essayist. He belonged to the Movimiento Infrarrealista in Mexico City in 1975-1978, a group of young Latin American poets who included Mario Santiago, Roberto Bolaño, Bruno Montané, Mara Larrosa, Cuauhtémoc Méndez, José Peguero, and others, searching for the unification of art, politics and everyday life.

He has lived in the USA since 1978, where he held diverse types of jobs and participated in several cultural initiatives. Since 1991 he has been professor of Latin American and US Latino Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Poetry books are Báilame este viento, Mariana (1980), which earned the First Prize in the 1980 Chicano literary Contest at UC Irvine, and Amor de Lejos…Fools' Love (Arte Publico Press, 1986), a finalist in the 1984 Casa de las Américas Literary Prize held in Cuba. His poems have appeared in several journals in Latin America and the USA, as well as in the following anthologies: Under the Fifth Sun. Latino Literature from California (edited by Rick Heide), En otra voz: Antología de la literatura Hispana de los Estados Unidos (edited by Nicholas Kanellos), Literatura Chicana 1965-1995 (edited by Manuel de Jesús Hernández-Gutiérrez and David William Foster), New Writing From Mexico. A TriQuarterly Collection of Newly Translated Prose and Poetry (edited by Reginald Gibbons) and Poetas de una generación. 1950-1959 (edited by Evodio Escalante). Other poetry he has written is in two manuscripts “Nomadic Nation / Nación nómada” and “Ciudades de otros”.

In literary criticism, Rubén Medina has also published Autor, autoridad y autorización: escritura y poética de Octavio Paz, which was published by Colegio de México in 1999. He has just completed another book on Mexican narrative and film entitled Genealogías del presente y pasado. Literatura y cine meXicanos. Currently, he is working on a book of short stories, entitled El silencio del salvaje.

Nación Nómada
