steel-toe work boots<br \/>\ntouch the ground.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00faper Pancho\u2019s tamale arms<br \/>\nand legs don\u2019t hide<br \/>\nfrom the scorching sun<br \/>\nto sell diamond-faced<br \/>\nwatches nor does he<br \/>\nbuild golden hotel skyscrapers,<br \/>\nreaching for the green<br \/>\nDollar God.<\/p>\n<p>On site, his super eyes<br \/>\nlook at an hablador<br \/>\nstraight in the eye<br \/>\nand know<br \/>\nwhen he\u2019s spoofing.<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho stands his ground<br \/>\nagainst Hate Giants,<br \/>\nwho only see his dusty jeans<br \/>\nlike the \u201c<em>Don\u2019t do this!<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nand \u201c<em>Don\u2019t do that!<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nRule Droppers,<br \/>\nspitting rocks for words<br \/>\nlike \u201cStop throwing<br \/>\ndirt at my truck!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At recurring snarling remarks<br \/>\nlike that <em>on a construction site<\/em>,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho whips out<br \/>\nhis corn-tortilla cape<br \/>\nas he unearths his shovel<br \/>\nand raises his super weapon,<br \/>\nand p\u00e1catelas<br \/>\nMr. Liberty Mouth runs away<br \/>\nfrom S\u00faper Pancho<br \/>\nwho gains momentum<br \/>\nwith his machete shovel<br \/>\nin midair. \u201c\u00a1M\u00e1talo!\u201d<br \/>\nrages the work crew,<br \/>\n\u201c\u00a1M\u00e1talo Panchito!\u201d<br \/>\nBut underneath<br \/>\nthat faded tattered T-shirt,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho carries<br \/>\na sacred heart<br \/>\nthat doesn\u2019t kill cuz<br \/>\nhe\u2019s not a man-killing-man.<\/p>\n<p>If S\u00faper Pancho<br \/>\nwitnesses a Mr. Liberty Mouth<br \/>\nlash out torture words<br \/>\nat his fellow workers,<br \/>\nhe loosens his super huarache tongue.<br \/>\nAnd when Mr. Liberty Mouth blares<br \/>\nat him for taking off<br \/>\nhis long-sleeved shirt,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho steps hard<br \/>\nwith words, \u201c\u00a1A m\u00ed no me gritas cabr\u00f3n!<br \/>\n\u00a1Aqu\u00ed ya no estamos viviendo<br \/>\nen los tiempos de la esclavitud!<br \/>\n\u00a1Qu\u00e9date con tu pinche trabajo!\u201d<br \/>\nand walks away.<br \/>\nWith SP stamped proudly<br \/>\non his chest,<br \/>\nhis super strength goes<br \/>\nwhere he will raise<br \/>\nstrong foundations.<\/p>\n<p>At home, on Saturdays<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho trades<br \/>\nhis shovel for a super apron<br \/>\nand prepares his super hands<br \/>\nfor the rhythm of the molcajete<br \/>\nfrom The Land of Ma\u00edz\u2014<br \/>\nmano a mano,<br \/>\nsuper flesh meets volcanic rock.<br \/>\nGarlic, toasted chiles verdes<br \/>\nand tomatoes erupt<br \/>\nas salsa overflows<br \/>\ninto S\u00faper Pancho\u2019s<br \/>\nhand-made tortillas.<\/p>\n<p>After a sacred meal,<br \/>\nsurrounded by corn tortilla faces,<br \/>\nwhile humming a song,<br \/>\nhe takes a broom<br \/>\nand mop for a dance<br \/>\nacross a smudged floor<br \/>\nand tells his sons,<br \/>\n\u201cA la mujer no se le pega<br \/>\nni con el p\u00e9talo de una rosa\u201d.<br \/>\nWith his avocado belly,<br \/>\nhe heads to his backyard<br \/>\nand walks<br \/>\ninto The Garden of Dreams,<br \/>\nwhere no weed<br \/>\nis too stubborn<br \/>\nfor his super hands,<br \/>\nwhere no tree is too tall<br \/>\nfor his reach,<br \/>\nwhere he and his S\u00faper Lola<br \/>\ntend a green Michoac\u00e1n<br \/>\nin Alta California\u2014<br \/>\nwhere trees bear fruit,<br \/>\ndancing to the beat<br \/>\nof cumbias and rancheras.<\/p>\n<p>And on one of those rare weekends,<br \/>\nwhen work slows down,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho crosses<br \/>\nthe pseudo border<br \/>\non his flying tortilla carcacha<br \/>\nfar away for the weekend<br \/>\nwith his family,<br \/>\nwho fastens up like tamales<br \/>\nto The Land of Ma\u00edz,<br \/>\nwhere homes breathe<br \/>\ntortillas and frijoles\u2014<br \/>\naway from the white and red bars<br \/>\nthat always await the return<br \/>\nof S\u00faper Pancho\u2019s super<br \/>\nman strength.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ELOGIO PARA S\u00daPER PANCHO DE LA TIERRA DEL MA\u00cdZ<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Coronado con un sombrero negro,<br \/>\nuna aureola de polvo arrastra<br \/>\ndetr\u00e1s de S\u00faper Pancho<br \/>\nde la abrasador<br \/>\npara vender relojes enfrentados<br \/>\nde diamantes,<br \/>\nni construyen hoteles rascacielos dorados,<br \/>\nacerc\u00e1ndose al Dios<br \/>\ndel D\u00f3lar verde.<\/p>\n<p>En la obra, sus s\u00faper ojos<br \/>\nven a un hablador<br \/>\ndirecto a los ojos<br \/>\ny saben<br \/>\ncu\u00e1ndo est\u00e1n burl\u00e1ndose.<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho se mantiene firme<br \/>\ncontra los Gigantes de Odio,<br \/>\nque s\u00f3lo ven sus pantalones de mezclilla empolvados,<br \/>\ncomo los Impongo Reglas<br \/>\n<em>\u00a1\u201cNo hagas eso\u201d\u00a1<\/em><br \/>\ny <em>\u00a1\u201cNo hagas aquello\u201d!<\/em>,<br \/>\nescupiendo piedras por palabras,<br \/>\ncomo \u00a1\u201cDeja de tirar<br \/>\ntierra a mi camioneta\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>A comentarios gru\u00f1ones recurrentes<br \/>\ncomo esos en una obra de construcci\u00f3n,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho saca<br \/>\nsu capa de tortilla<br \/>\nmientras desentierra su pala<br \/>\ny alza su s\u00faper arma,<br \/>\ny p\u00e1catelas<br \/>\nMister Palabras de Libertad se aleja corriendo<br \/>\nde S\u00faper Pancho<br \/>\nquien gana fuerza<br \/>\ncon su pala machete<br \/>\nen el aire. \u00a1\u201cM\u00e1talo\u201d!<br \/>\nrages the work crew,<br \/>\nle gritan los trabajadores,<br \/>\n\u00a1\u201cM\u00e1talo Panchito\u201d!<br \/>\nPero debajo<br \/>\nde esa camiseta deshilachada,<br \/>\nS\u00faper Pancho carga<br \/>\nun sagrado coraz\u00f3n<br \/>\nque no mata porque<br \/>\nno es un hombre-mata hombres.<\/p>\n<p>Si S\u00faper Pancho<br \/>\nes testigo de un Mister Palabras de Libertad<br \/>\nlatigar palabras<br \/>\na sus compa\u00f1eros,<br \/>\nafloja su s\u00faper lengua huarache.<br \/>\nY cuando un Mister Palabras de Libertad le grita<br \/>\npor mandil<br \/>\ny prepara sus s\u00faper manos<br \/>\npara el ritmo del molcajete<br \/>\nde La Tierra del Ma\u00edz\u2014<br \/>\nmano a mano,<br \/>\ns\u00faper piel se encuentra con piedra He helped establish the influential Border Art Workshop\/Taller de Arte Fronteriza (BAW\/TAF).\u00a0Ochoa is also a teacher of art and Chicano heritage.\u00a0His work has been shown nationally and internationally, including at the Venice Bi-Annual, at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Contemporary_Art_San_Diego\">Museum of Contemporary Art<\/a>, San Diego and in the groundbreaking exhibition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicano_Art:_Resistance_and_Affirmation\">Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation<\/a>(CARA).
